Abayomi Otebolaku, PhD, FHEA

Bio

Dr. Otebolaku is an experienced University academic currently a Senior Lecturer and a researcher in Computing at  Sheffield Hallam University (SHU), Sheffield, United Kingdom. At SHU, he teaches and leads modules at both undergraduate (Software Engineering and Computer Science) and postgraduate (Big Data Analytics) levels.

He studied Computer Engineering and Computer Science in Nigeria and South Africa respectively, before receiving the PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering (Telecommunication Engineering) from the Electrical and Computer Engineering department, Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, Portugal.

Prior to studying for Postgraduate degrees, he worked in the ICT industry as  Systems Engineer. Besides, before joining Sheffield Hallam University, he was a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool, U.K.

In addition, he was a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, University of Aveiro, and the Institute of Telecommunications, Aveiro, Portugal.

From 2009 to 2015, he was Research and development Engineer at the Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia, INESC TEC (formerly INESC Porto), also in Portugal.

He is an active researcher with participation in several research projects, including European H2020 Projects. His research focuses broadly on mobile and pervasive computing, and specifically on context awareness, activity context recognition, mobile data management, and IoT-driven personalized services.

He is a recipient of various scholarships and grants. For example, he received the INESC TEC grants for doctoral research from 2009 to 2011. He also received the Portuguese’s government Fundacao para Ciencia e a Tecnologia (Foundation for Science and Technology, FCT) full doctoral grants (Bolsa de Deutoramento) from 2011 to 2015. Dr Otebolaku also received grants for his MSc in Computer Science at the Centre of Excellence for Mobile e-Services for Development, Department of Computer Science, the University of Zululand, South Africa. He is also a recipient of Microsoft travel grants.

Research

His research applies artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) within context sensing systems to address real-world problems, focusing on ambient intelligence, context-awareness, and mobile data management. Specifically, his work has addressed various problems in the domain of mobile multimedia systems, providing intelligent mobile multimedia delivery and consumptions using intelligence obtained from smartphone sensory data.

He has also addressed problems related to human activity context recognition and its applications in building context-aware personalized user preferences. These involve the deployment of intelligent applications on smart devices.

His current work focuses on the application of AI/Machine learning, Edge Computing and Software Engineering to address real-world problems in energy, healthcare, and environments.

If you have similar research interests, and you want to study for a PhD or an MSc, he is happy to supervise both masters and PhD projects in the areas of context sensing systems, ambient intelligence, Trust-aware systems, Edge Computing, mobile data analytics, particularly the application of AI and Machine learning to various emerging real-world problems.
